The B:Hive and Goodside commercial social hub within Auckland’s Smales Farm business park is the the Supreme winner in the 2019 Landscapes of Distinction awards.

Designed and constructed by Natural Habitats, the Goodside eatery features a glasshouse, harvest crate planters for productive gardens with fruit trees, herbs and climbers, and vertical pillar gardens providing an intimate scale for this commercial dining hub.

Natural Habitats has researched the agricultural past of the site to generate a modern market garden experience for visitors to the eateries based at Goodside, says Registered Master Landscapers’ CEO, Janine Scott.

“Compositions of colour, form and texture are skillfully put together in the mixed planting palettes of grasses, perennials and edibles surrounding the eateries,” says Janine. “And all this is above ground on top of a carpark!”

Inside the surreal atrium space to the B Hive building (pictured) there are large scale organic shaped planters referencing the Hauraki Gulf Islands and providing ecosystem services of oxygen production to the offices and shared open spaces. These integrate well with the rest of the award winning interiorscape.

“Together these gardens demonstrate a high level of innovation and landscape technology, along with masterful productive gardening,” says Janine.

The B:Hive and Goodside project also won Best Design of the Year in the Premier awards and picked up Gold awards for Construction, Garden Maintenance, Horticulture and for Design once again.

In the 2019 awards, judges critiqued 56 entries with landscaping projects ranging from playgrounds to business parks, and reserves to private residences.
