Meadows is a 100 percent Kiwi owned family business which started with a passion for mushrooms in Canterbury in 1970. Meadows desire to maintain high environmental sustainability standards has been recently supported by the launch of new fully biodegradable and recyclable cardboard pre-packs for their pre-packaged mushroom range.
The packs are made of recycled board and are printed with natural inks. Meadows have switched all their range including White Buttons, Swiss Browns and Portabello’s to the new packs.
Chief Executive Office John Barnes said “Environmental issues are of paramount importance to New Zealanders and we see our switch to cardboard packs from plastic as a major breakthrough within the New Zealand produce sector”.
As well as protecting the mushrooms, a moisture-resistant barrier added to the cardboard ensures the produce stays fresh whilst ensuring the pack retains the ability to degrade during the composting process.
The new packs are expected to receive big support from the major supermarket chains, and packs will be available to all New Zealand consumers nationwide.
