Welcome to our May issue – one that deserves to be branded the ‘diversity issue’ because we really do have a diverse selection of stories for you this month.
Standouts include our inspiration piece on Grounded’s Ben Grant and Josh Kempton – who are on a mission to win the war on plastic waste with their home compostable packaging products – and Porana Overlocking’s Tim Lewin, who has built a thriving business despite living with a major disability.
For the cover story we examine the remarkable world of Zuru’s Nick Mowbray – whose journey has involved countless twists and turns, highs and lows and a potentially debilitating illness – not-to-mention some rather high-stake lawsuits.
It seems that the international toy marketplace is no place for the
faint-hearted!
If you’ve ever wondered exactly how artificial intelligence (AI) can benefit businesses today and tomorrow, then you should find our interview with AI Forum executive director Ben Reid illuminating. Conducted just days prior to the AI-DAY Conference in Auckland, Ben explains the different forms of AI that can boost business efficiency, how pervasive the technologies are already in business (although you may not be aware they are there), how businesses can get on board with the technologies, and what the future of AI actually looks like.
Then, examining the nitty gritty of business ownership, this month business growth specialist Fiona Clark offers some useful strategies for hard-working business owners who’re struggling to juggle business and family responsibilities. The key takeaway I get from her article is that it’s so important to look after yourself and be kind to yourself. If you’re in a good space, then it stands to reason that your business will perform better too.
I’ll finish on a spot of good news – the announcement that the David Awards are back in business again. If you’re a business owner with up to ten employees – performing well and with an inspiring tale of overcoming adversity – then not only are you an absolute hero, you’re also a contender for some well-deserved recognition.
