Following two years of expansion and a fintech category win at the 2017 NZ Innovation Awards, home-grown cloud-based payroll solutions provider Simply Payroll has rebranded to PaySauce – reflecting a broader approach to helping businesses manage their people.
New features and functionality – including fully-mobile rostering and time sheeting, HR management tools, contract management, and budgeting and resource allocation advice – are all being planned for 2018 and beyond.
PaySauce CEO and co-founder Asantha Wijeyeratne (pictured below) says that payroll is the core activity around which a huge number of other business needs and current pain points exist.
“We have been talking closely with our customers for the past 24 months and we noticed immediately that we could be adding more functionality to our solution that was complimentary to payroll, but also had the potential to solve a huge number of their issues – so we started building most of that out. Our desire is to become known as the only payroll provider with an appetite to be truly different for our customers and partners.”
“Our desire is to become known as the only payroll provider with an appetite to be truly different for our customers and partners.”
This philosophy is evident in the special attention given to the agricultural sector, where PaySauce has built a strong customer base.
“Agri payroll had, for the most part, been neglected in New Zealand until we helped farm owners address some core regulatory issues with an innovative fix,” explains Wijeyeratne.
The rebranding also marks the start of exploration into markets outside New Zealand. Wijeyeratne says their local experience holds PaySauce in good stead for successful expansion, and research indicates that many of the issues faced by Kiwi SMEs are consistent around the world.
“Managing payroll in this country is actually very difficult. In trying to simplify the process for business owners and make it as easy and painless to pay people, we have had to build our solution differently, says Wijeyeratne.
“With PaySauce we have flexible, scalable and proven technology that is working for hundreds of customers in the most complex payroll situations imaginable.”
More gains, less pain
Gladvale Farms is a large-scale dairy and crop farming operation in Central Southland milking approximately 4,200 cows across 3,500 acres of milking platform.
Managing a business of Gladvale’s size requires ensuring it succeeds in all the external elements of the farming industry – stock management, equipment upkeep, operating large workshops – and internal housekeeping, such as compliance, housing, managing staff and payroll.
This is no small ask, as there are 39 staff, five dairy farms and about 10,000 stock units involved. The business also operates a further four properties totalling 4,800 acres across nine properties.
Gladvale Farms set out to investigate payroll options to make life easier and ensure that internal reporting and management improved, freeing the team to focus energy on other parts of the business.
“We did a lot of shopping around and settled on Xero, says Mary-Anne Lindsay, Gladvale Farms’ office and HR manager. “Then we looked at integrating programmes with Xero and settled on two programmes: the Figured Farming app programme, which is extremely good, and PaySauce, because it fits in with Xero and integrates really well.
“Integration was one of the key factors we were looking for. Everything from PaySauce, Xero and Figured Farming comes together so you have a complete report.”
Lindsay has found the PaySauce team highly knowledgeable and she likes the way PaySauce is developing.
“I can see quite a big future there. I have been telling every other farmer to get PaySauce. It’s so easy. The other thing it does is serve as a tax agent for PAYE, so I don’t have to bother anymore. I used to hate doing PAYE reports.”
