A Kiwi peer-to-peer car rental startup is has launched a new service to help New Zealanders make money while they travel instead of wasting it on parking.

MyCarYourRental.com is like Airbnb for cars and its new service is simple: users can now drive to the airport and leave their car without paying.

Then, while they’re away, the car is rented to the platform’s other users to generate revenue for the owner. When they return from their trip, their car is waiting for them at the airport.

The service — called “FlyParker” — launches today at Auckland Airport with plans to expand throughout New Zealand airports in coming months.

“FlyParker is an absolute no-brainer,” MyCarYourRental CEO Henrik Stovring (pictured) says.

“Why would you have your car sit stationary at the airport while you’re away and cost you money, when you can now have it earning you money?

“That’s money you can spend on cocktails by the beach on your holiday as you relax knowing your car is working hard back home. Our system is just as easy as parking at the airport, and with full insurance on all our rentals, it’s just as secure.”

Every year, Kiwis spend millions of dollars on airport parking. With the new alternative launched today, Storving says this money no longer needs to be wasted.

The longer the trip, the bigger the benefits. For example, taking a trip overseas for 20 days would cost $185 in parking fees at Auckland Airport.

“So, just by using our service, people going on a three week holiday can save almost $200 with FlyParker right of the bat,” Stovring says.

“Add to that the average income that loaners earn through MyCarYourRental, which is $20 per day,  and that comes to $400 revenue for 20 days. So, the difference between paying to keep your car parked and using FlyParker for a 20 day trip is $585 in your pocket.”

According to Statistics New Zealand, Kiwis took 2.9 million trips overseas last year.

“Even if just a third of those trips saved $100 with FlyParker, that would be almost $100m going to Kiwi families instead of parking fees, every single year,” Stovring says.

Peer-to-peer car sharing not only makes huge financial sense, it’s much better for the environment, too.

“Instead of getting more cars on the road, we need to get better at using those already in circulation more efficiently,” Stovring says.
