Mesh Wi-fi systems promise to remove Wi-fi dead spots around your house, last year we tested the D-Link COVR Wi-fi 5 mesh system and found it great in a house that can be challenging for Wi-fi coverage (Multiple levels and distant bedrooms). A year on there is now a Wi-fi 6 system, the COVR AX AX1800 Dual Band Seamless Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System to be precise, offering the extra power and speed of the new Wi-fi 6 standard. We tested the COVR-X1873 pack which comprises three units. One acts as the router and the other two are placed strategically around the house or office for best signal (some experimenting may be required). Mesh Wi-fi is seamless so your devices switch to the best signal (all units use the same network ID and password) with no input required from the user.

If you want the technical details on the units see the launch story we wrote.

As we commented last time” You know the challenge – Wi-fi works great in the lounge near the router, ok in your bedroom and barely in your daughters’ room, the home office is even worse. Welcome to the world of Wi-Fi. Until recently the only real options were to set up complicated repeaters or power over ethernet solutions, fine if you are a geek but not if you are “technically challenged”.

One of our criticisms of the previous system was that the remote units only provided one lan port – D-Link must have heard us as all units now sport 4 LAN ports (and a WAN port) to connect devices that need a cable connection.

Setup is simple using a D-Link app on your phone (Or you can go the old school route and setup via a PC), once the base unit is setup the others connect automatically.

In our case it was hard to compare performance as we get very good results from our top end D-Link Wi-fi 6 router, but we did see good consistency across all rooms in our multi-level house.

Another advantage is that the mesh units are fairly attractive for home use (Vs the rather utilitarian look of a lot of normal routers).

If you have issues getting Wi-fi around your home (or office) these could be the answer you are looking for.

The COVR AX range is available now from  www.dlink.co.nz and from all authorised D-Link Partners and Retailers  for the following RRPs:

 COVR-X1873 (3-Pack) NZ$599.99

COVR-X1872 (2-Pack)  NZ$499.99

COVR-X1870 (Router/ Add-On Point)  NZ$279.99
