The travel and tourism sector host familiarisations or more casually, ‘famils’, as a way to showcase their product to decision makers. These trips offer the opportunity to gain in-depth information about different regions, attractions, accommodation options, venues and conferencing services. While there is usually a measure of fun on a famil, the primary objective is to showcase available products and provide an experience to attendees for well-informed future purchasing decisions. If you are selected to join a famil, there is etiquette to be aware of. \

Are you a qualified buyer? When a hotel select guests to attend a famil they are looking closely at what type of business you work for. Do you currently purchase hotel room nights for your travellers or conferencing, not necessarily from their hotel? There is usually a set of criteria to select the qualified buyers based on the destination and hotel’s needs.

Show interest in the product you are on the famil to see. All the host properties and attractions will be providing you complimentary experiences and all they ask in return is your undivided attention. Give them feedback on their product and how it could work for your business. During the famil schedule there will be time to return phone calls and clear your emails.

Have fun, but not too much. Famils are meant to be fun, but remember you are representing your business. There will be food and beverage on offer, yet you may have another full day starting in the morning. Follow-up after your famil. There shouldn’t be any hard-sell during the famil, but your host will expect that you stay in touch after the famil and talk to them about any opportunities for future bookings.

Consider a famil as being like a test drive. When you are on-site, critically look at the offering and how it will work for your business to enable your team to base themselves for work or hold a successful conference.
