Pete and Marleen (aka Mrs Pete) Suy, the passionate minds behind Pete’s Naturals Lemonade, have tapped into a bottomless vat of sustainability, community support, and culinary innovation to grow their small business. Recently honoured at The David Awards 2023 with the Most Outstanding Social Impact award, their journey from Belgium to New Zealand is as refreshing and inspiring as their renowned natural sodas.

Marleen, originally from Belgium and the daughter of a baker, met Pete while he was seeking work at her family’s bakery. Together, they embarked on a culinary odyssey that saw them owning bakeries in Belgium and Colorado before finding their true calling in New Zealand. Pete’s initial foray into the beverage industry stemmed from his love for creating natural sodas, a venture that perfectly aligned with their commitment to sustainability and community support.

“We’ve been on quite a journey so far,” reflects Marleen. “Starting from owning bakeries in Belgium to eventually settling in New Zealand and starting Pete’s Naturals Lemonade – it’s been a fulfilling path driven by our passion for quality food and sustainable practices.”

Founded in 2009 in the picturesque town of Motueka, Pete’s Naturals set out with a simple yet powerful mission: to craft delicious beverages using only freshly squeezed New Zealand fruit juices, all while minimising sugar content and environmental impact. Their dedication to sustainability is woven into every aspect of their operations, from harnessing solar power and using electric vehicles to employing recyclable materials.

“Our core USP is our commitment to Fairtrade@home,” Pete explains. “It ensures that we pay a fair price for the fruit we use, reducing food wastage and supporting local growers. Being 100% natural is not just about the product but about our responsibility to the environment and community.”

Winning the Most Outstanding Social Impact category at The David Awards 2023 was a defining moment for Pete’s Naturals. “It was awesome for us,” says Pete. ” It validated our commitment to sustainability and community  support, putting a spotlight on our efforts to make a positive difference.”

Marleen adds, “For us, it’s not just about making great sodas; it’s about showing that a small business can lead with purpose and inspire others to do the same.”

Like many businesses, Pete’s Naturals faced challenges amid economic uncertainty over the past year. Rising costs and market fluctuations posed significant hurdles. However, their commitment to quality, sustainability, and community support has been instrumental in navigating these turbulent times.

“The past 12 months have been challenging,” acknowledges Marleen. “We’ve had to be more innovative and adaptive, but our loyal customer base and our core values have kept us resilient.”

Given the current business climate, the owner couple have sought out mentorship and financial advice to help steer them through the turbulent times. “Engaging with local business networks and industry experts has provided valuable insights and strategies. It’s been crucial to have a support system to bounce ideas off and find solutions to the challenges we face,” Marleen says.

Looking forward, Pete’s Naturals remains focused on innovation and expansion. “We’re currently running a pledgeme campaign to crowdfund for a new canning line,” reveals Pete. “Additionally, we’ve recently won three more product awards for our sodas, which is a testament to our ongoing commitment to quality and innovation.”

Marleen emphasises their ongoing mission to rescue fruit for juicing and reduce food wastage in New Zealand. “Rescuing fruit and minimising food wastage is not just a business strategy but a moral imperative,” she says. “It’s about making a positive impact on our environment and supporting our local community.”

When asked about advice for fellow small business owners, Pete and Marleen are enthusiastic about the benefits of participating in awards like The David Awards. “Entering awards like these is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your hard work and achievements,” Marleen advises. “It provides recognition, boosts morale, and opens doors to new connections and opportunities.”

Pete adds, “It’s also a chance to reflect on your journey and goals, which can be incredibly motivating. They both encourage other small businesses to step forward and share their stories of innovation and social impact.
