Exports crucial to NZ economy: report

ExportNZโ€™s 2023 Pre-Election Report sets out the state of play for the sector and invites the next government to collaborate further on the challenges facing businesses. ExportNZโ€™s executive director Josh Tan (pictured) says exporting is crucial to the success of New Zealandโ€™s economy. โ€œNew Zealandโ€™s total export value was $89.9 billion in 2022, thatโ€™s 24 percent of New Zealandโ€™s total GDP. The next government needs to understand why international trade matters, and how it can support the sector in future. โ€œOur pre-election report includes feedback and outcomes from the past 24 months of advocacy work, our pre-election engagement tour around the country and all-of-government roadshow,โ€ he adds, โ€œas well as results from the annual DHL ExportNZ Barometer survey, released just

Building a six-figure Amazon.com business

Damon Paling shares insights on the highs and lows of launching a New Zealand brand on Amazon.com. An excellent opportunity to expand internationally or a seemingly endless investment? In this case, the journey to establishing a successful six-figure business on Amazon.com began by abandoning an outdated โ€˜set and forgetโ€™ approach. The initial strategy involved a two-year-old Amazon Marketplace store that had been outsourced to a third-party based in New Zealand. The recent 2023 ExportNZ ASB Wellington Export Awards celebrated the finest the region has to offer, with everything that makes a good exporter great on full display. Three key features stood out to me on the night: Many successful exporters were embedding sustainability within their businesses. The impressive sector diversity that

Fermentation technology delivers major export boost

A new world-first fermentation technology developed by Kiwi scientists is set to provide a multi-million-dollar export boost for New Zealandโ€™s nutraceutical exports.  The technology allows scientists to grow and extract bioactive compounds from a mushroom organism in a laboratory and fermentation process for use in health supplements – reducing the need to farm and process fully grown mushrooms. The new method provides a more consistent level of bioactive ingredient for use in supplements and will pave the way for an entirely new local export industry built around extraction of molecules for other food and wellness products. Scientists will use the new process to grow part of the root of the Ganoderma Lingzhi mushroom in under 10 days – which would
