An article in the Sydney Morning Herald a couple of months ago posed the question, ‘Is Australia too franchised?’ It suggested that, with up to 1100 franchise systems for 22 million people Australia is already the most franchised nation in the world on the basis of number of franchises per capita. It goes on to suggest that, before long, there will be over 100,000 franchised outlets – one franchise for every 224 Australians. ‘Do we want to become McAustralia?’ writer Tony Featherston asked. |
