The new era dawning
Well, here we are. Goodbye teens, and hello twenties.
The 20th century gave us the ‘Roaring 20s’. I wonder what the equivalent decade in the 21st century will be known as?
It certainly won’t be ‘boring’.
For the planet’s sake, and all of us on board, I’m hoping there’ll be less ‘ignoring’ and more ‘restoring’.
This month NZBusiness has all the ingredients to help you get a little visionary about your business – to think about where you’re taking it in 2020 and beyond.
It begins with our cover story and thoughts from a selection of forward-thinking business owners.
Think back over the past 20 years and consider how technology has changed the business landscape – much of it driven by the Internet. Some of the more recent technologies – AI and blockchain for example – are spawning whole new industries
and opportunities.
Consider, too, how massive the ‘apps’ market has become over recent years, and how our whole existence now revolves around our smartphones. (Yes, even for Boomers!)
By the way, it’s high time somebody popularised a new name for the smartphone, because the old ‘mobile’ now carries a vast array of new functionality – and that will only increase as we journey into the next decade.
The cover story starts on a positive note around sustainability. In 2019, there was more evidence of businesses having an appetite to address the climate change and carbon emissions skeleton that’s in all our cupboards. That’s an encouraging sign.
This is my one big hope for the 20s – that the entire spectrum of business gets totally behind the environmental cause.
We really do live in changing times – and change has inevitably impacted on this
print magazine.
If you don’t already know, starting this year we are publishing quarterly. So there will be a slightly longer wait until our next issue, the ‘People Edition’ – which will be published on April 23rd.
You’ll notice its focus on people – on you the business owner, and the people who work for you. You’ll also notice the magazine is a lot fatter.
