D-Link offer a couple of options for getting high speed internet access when away from home, they are likely to particularly appeal to regular travelers, especially when travelling overseas where you can usually buy a local data sim for a good price vs using roaming data. There is a USB version for laptops and the stand alone router we are testing here that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot network that you could connect a laptop, phone, Ipad or PC to.
It uses 4G technology for a fast connection. Simply install a micro sim and if desired a microSD card. It supports both 2.4 and 5Mhz Wi-Fi bands and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) making getting up and running a breeze. The internal battery has a 14 hour life and It’s also easy to charge the DWR-933 by connecting it directly to your computer’s USB port via the supplied USB Type-A to Micro-Type-A cable. It can support up to 32 connected devices.
To try it out we connected our iPad to the internet via the D-Link hotspot and then via a hotspot from our iPhone. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given both were using the same Mobile network, results were very similar. The D-Link delivered 53 Mbps download and 17 Mbps upload whilst the iPhone hotspot was 53 download and 23 upload.
The DWR-933 is simple to set up and provides effective internet access for multiple devices independent of a mobile phone, which will be an advantage in many situations. We have used similar devices when travelling in Australia, where they allow cost effective internet access if you are there for a while utilising a local data sim.
The DWR-933 4G LTE Cat 6 Wi‑Fi Hotspot are available now from www.dlink.co.nz and from all authorised D-Link partners and retailers RRP’s is – NZ$249.99
