Generative AI: How are we preparing the engineers of tomorrow?
Keep up with the latest industry standards and learn to solve real-world problems using Generative AI with the University of Canterbury’s engineering programme.
The field of engineering is no stranger to rapid technological shifts, and Generative AI looks to be the next big trend. New capabilities are emerging each year, challenging professionals to remain current. At UC, we recognise the importance of embracing AI’s potential – but we want to make sure our students know how to anticipate and mitigate the risks that come with using it. Because, at the end of the day, it is the competent engineer that delivers functioning infrastructure and technological innovations, not a computer program.
For engineers, the role of Generative AI is multifaceted. It works as a research assistant, helping to collate and summarise information for them to appraise. It can be a collaborative partner for ideation, making suggestions or criticisms. And it can speed up those mundane administrative tasks that make you daydream about a career change – editing emails for tone, formatting tables, scheduling meetings across time zones. While it should never be used to replace engineering competency, used effectively, it can provide a competitive advantage.
Understanding how to use Generative AI responsibly is now a critical component of engineering education. Our teaching approach is experiential, focusing not only on the technical aspects of Generative AI but also on fostering a culture of ethical innovation. We ask students to confront practical challenges like verification, transparency, and privacy throughout their academic journey.
We are committed to producing industry-ready graduates. The demand from employers is unequivocal – they want individuals who can bring innovation into their workplaces. Our students are adapting to meet these demands and our faculty members are learning alongside them. Curriculum development is responding to ensure that our educational offerings reflect the latest industry standards and needs, like the Master of AI and Master of Applied Data Science.
We invite you to explore the UC Faculty of Engineering, where we are innovating engineering education through the integration of Generative AI. Join us in our commitment to developing a future that is creative, intelligent, responsible and secure.
