Josh Stretch is the HELL Kāpiti franchise owner.

From delivery driver to franchise owner: 21-year-old takes over HELL Kāpiti

A former delivery driver who started at HELL Pizza straight out of school has become one of the brand’s youngest franchise owners, taking over the Kāpiti store at just 21 years old.

Josh Stretch relocated from Palmerston North earlier this year to assume ownership of the local franchise, turning what began as an after-school job into a business career.

Stretch joined HELL Pizza after finishing Year 13, initially intending to save money before heading to university. However, he says the role quickly changed his plans.

“I originally planned to save for university, but the job ended up changing my direction completely,” he says.

“I gave uni a go, but after a couple of months I realised I missed working and had more to give here.”

After leaving university, Stretch returned to the business and was mentored by his former boss and now business partner, Chirag Thour.

“He saw potential in me early on and helped me understand the business side of things from the ground up. That support made this feel achievable,” Stretch says.

When the opportunity to take over the Kāpiti franchise became available, Stretch says he was ready to take the leap.

“When the Kāpiti store became available, I stepped up. I was prepared to move anywhere in New Zealand to have my own store.

“Kāpiti has been incredibly welcoming, and I’m looking forward to building something here.”

Founded in 1996 in Wellington, HELL Pizza has grown to 78 stores nationwide and has built a reputation for promoting young talent within its franchise network.

Founder Callum Davies says entrepreneurial risk-taking has always been part of the company’s culture.

“There’s always been a level of risk involved with HELL, and backing people who are willing to take that on is how the brand has grown,” says Davies.

“We’ve always supported people like Josh; those who put in the work, back themselves and are willing to take ownership early.”

Stretch is among a growing number of HELL franchise operators under the age of 30, many of whom started in entry-level roles before progressing into business ownership.

Now settling into the Kāpiti community, Stretch says one of his key focuses is building a positive workplace culture and encouraging younger staff to see broader opportunities for themselves.

“I want my team to care about their work and feel proud of what they do, even if they’re only here for a short time,” he says.

“If they can take that mindset into whatever comes next, that’s a win.”

Although still new to the region, Stretch says he is eager to become more involved in the local community and continue growing the business.

“The reception so far has been really positive. I’m excited to keep getting involved in the community and finding creative ways to build on that.”
