AMP Scholarship winners 2013

Rather than a relatively narrow focus of most awards the AMP Scholarship Awards cover a diverse range of amazing Kiwi’s who get a leg up to achieve their dreams whether they be in business, arts, sport, study or community areas.

At the Awards dinner held at the Auckland Museum on Wednesday 20 November, 16 Awards were presented  in an evening full of truly inspirational stories from some great New Zealander’s

AMP Scholarship winners 2013

Rather than a relatively narrow focus of most awards the AMP Scholarship Awards cover a diverse range of amazing Kiwi’s who get a leg up to achieve their dreams whether they be in business, arts, sport, study or community areas.

At the Awards dinner held at the Auckland Museum on Wednesday 20 November, 16 Awards were presented  in an evening full of truly inspirational stories from some great New Zealander’s

The winners were;

AMP National Scholarship Recipients 2013

 

Chris Fortune from Blenheim has been awarded a scholarship to build a mobile kitchen as part of his Kids Can Cook Kitchen programme aiming to motivate kids to cook healthy meals for themselves.

Remuera’s Charlotte Walker has been awarded a scholarship towards completing her Masters in Clinical Embryology at Oxford University. She aims to become a fertility specialist and is only the second New Zealander to be accepted into the course.

 

Lucy-Mary Mulholland, from Mt Eden, has been awarded a scholarship towards training with top art therapists in the USA to bring back to New Zealand new skills and knowledge in the field of youth mental health.

 

Claire Davies from Remuera has been awarded a scholarship towards her goal of building a device that lets blind people echolocate using ultrasound.

 

Suzanne Cowan from Eden Terrace has been awarded a scholarship to further her aim of being a leader in dance for people with disabilities and to create dance works that re–‐envision what it means to have a disability and to complete a PhD in dance.

 

Manurewa’s Vance McPhee, who set up a Facebook page with his wife: How to Feed a Family of Six for Under $20, has been awarded a scholarship to develop a food box service to fight poverty in New Zealand.

 

Wellington’s Scottie Reeve has been awarded a scholarship to create an inner city café employing twenty teens each year. He aims to transform their lives with their first job and subsequent move into long–‐term employment.

 

Kaitlyn Watts from Palmerston North has been awarded a scholarship towards her goal of representing New Zealand and winning the World Junior Squash Championships in 2018.

 

Palmerston North’s Cameron Kilgour has been awarded a scholarship to create DiaManage, a mobile app with a New Zealand food database to simplify blood glucose management for New Zealand diabetics.

 

Architectural designer Sarosh Mulla from Henderson has been awarded a scholarship towards building an innovative environmental education and research space at the Longbush Eco–‐sanctuary in Gisborne. His aim is to provide public access for people to see endangered native plant and animal species.

 

Trampoliner Lizzie Stevenson from Canterbury has been awarded a scholarship to help towards her goal of winning a medal for New Zealand at the World Age Group Trampoline Championships. She believes trampolining is a sport in which it is impossible to be unhappy.

 

Torbay’s Teneale Hatton, an Olympic sprint canoe and ocean ski racing athlete, has been awarded a scholarship towards her goal of becoming a world leader and competing in the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

 

Canterbury’s Lewis Hawkins, an eight–‐year–‐old Scrabble champion, has been awarded a scholarship to enable him to compete in the Scrabble Youth Championships in Dubai in December. Along the way he will compete in the Princess Cup in Thailand and will attend the World Mind Games in Prague.

 

AMP People Scholarships

 

 The AMP People Scholarships are open to AMP employees and Advisers. This year, one scholarship has been awarded to: –‐ Auckland AMP employee Scott Ellis, who has been awarded a scholarship towards his goal of creating a joint venture with his best friend to deliver butcher quality meat to private households at supermarket prices.

 

 AMP Study Start Scholarships

 

The AMP Study Start Scholarships are awarded to tertiary students to help with their studies. This year, one scholarship and two runner ups have been awarded. Recipients are: –

 

 Finn Mahon from Wellington, who has been awarded a scholarship towards his studies with a goal to design and build artificial limbs and implants for amputees. He has chosen as his technology assignment to design and build a prosthetic leg for a family friend who is a six–‐year–‐old amputee struggling to ride a bike.

 

Rotorua’s Kale Graham, who received a special recognition award of additional support and mentoring towards his goal of designing and building new automotive safety systems in order to save lives on New Zealand’s increasingly busy roads.

 

Westmere student Louis Goldwater Christie, who received a special recognition award to further his goal to contribute to the development of commercial and eventually consumer computers with quantum processors.
