Nowadays society equates success with long hours, taking work home and never switching off. In her book Thrive, Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group, contends that this definition of success is unsustainable, unsatisfying and unhealthy (and having collapsed through overwork, Huffington writes from experience). Building and looking after our financial capital is not enough, we must strive to protect and nurture our human capital as well, she says. “Stress and hyper-connectivity profoundly, and negatively, affect our creativity, productivity and decision-making.”
Alongside power and money, Huffington has identified a third way of quantifying success – a ‘third metric’ that recognises the importance of our well-being, our ability to draw on our intuition and inner wisdom, our sense of wonder, and our capacity for empathy and giving.
